Post No. 47: One Year After...

One year ago, on this day, we were reminded of the fragility of Life & the frailty of humankind when confronted with the boundless power of Nature. Reminded we were also that despite our mastery over science & technology and our ability to change & exploit the environment to satisfy our needs & wants, we are nonetheless still part of Nature and not outside of it or above it. Never were we masters of Nature. And as though it was afraid that we wouldn't understand, Nature, in the past few months, have given us a few more painful reminders; reminding us that if we continue to disrespect it or persist in doing harm to it, we too will not survive in the long run. For if a house is destroyed, perish with it the occupants inside it will too...

However, not all is gloom & doom. For amidst all these painful reminders, we were also reminded of the indomitable spirit of humankind, of our determination to survive & continue and of our strength to pick ourselves up after a fall. We are still here. Reminded we were also of the kindness & compassion, traits which we thought were long dead, that can be found in us and that despite our differences, we are still part of one common humanity. And reminded were we that, despite of all that have happened and though it may well also be the source of our greatest weakness, Hope survives and it remains the source of our greatest strength. Though Hope is frail, it is hard to kill.

Move on we must. However, we must also never forget the lessons we were reminded of, be they painful or not...
